John Dewey, the famous educational philosopher and one of the founders of pragmatism, said that pragmatism eliminates the need for the question of theory vs. practice (Dewey, 2008). Instead, pragmatism places theory and practice hand in hand. I find that I am in complete agreement with him. At the heart of pragmatism is the link between theory and practice. Theory is extracted from practice (practice informs theory) and then applied back to practice (theory informs practice). This is my core belief about research. The practical applications of research are the most interesting to me and this is true of my own research program. Currently, my main research interests are the motivation of mathematics students in higher education, in both mathematics courses and preservice teacher education courses, and the use of journal writing in mathematics.
